Image based covers have usually as person or group of people on the front of the cover (celebrities) to catch the eye of readers and have an appealing emotion, to make it noticeable. Travel Magazines also do this with a location of the place they are promoting so the reader will be interested as to where the location is and why they should go there besides the view.

Illustration based covers are used to present something out of the ordinary or comical, as there are not many illustration based covers that are sold. Most of the illustration based covers are independent and do not have a company that they are published under, some magazines use computer generated illustrations also.

Type Based Magazine covers are used to have unexpected or unusual news to the reader which is used through words than through pictures. Although there are not many of these they are still more popular than illustrated based covers.

Concept Based Covers are rarely used and cam be used as a combination of the previous three. These covers are used to either send out a important message or something with humor, which has to be interpreted by the audience in the right way. These are most commonly found in business magazines, news weekly magazines, or independent magazine.
